| Discovery 3 diff bearing issue |
|
Hi
My discovery was in today to have the rear, driver side, lower rose joint replaced on the suspension hub carrier.
When reassembling apparently the drive shaft was pulled out of the diff to allow assembly and the bearing instead of coming out fell in the diff. Can this happen or is more the rollers were pushed in ? when reassembly. Its a bit strange to me. surely ther is a lip it goes up against or something to stop it happening.
Any advice as i'm sure i will be given a huge bill!
Thanks in advance

Hi I'm not sure exactly what's happened but it was the lower rose joint on the wishbone to hub upright
So agree its seems strange maybe when pulling the drive shaft it came apart so it was taken out to rebuild?
A bit strange but it was at a reputable Landrover specialist not a dealer or back street garage.

It's the actual roller bearing in the diff housing so it sounds like the bearing or part is now in the diff itself!

I once had a rear driveshaft out to replace a leaking seal.
When trying to refit the driveshaft it wouldn't go back in because the bearing had fallen off. New diff required.
Only seen it the once though.

So if it's not meant to come out to replace who's responsible 130 notes to replace the rose joint as i didnt have time and now a diff !! I would have done it myself as usually do all the work.
I can only assume the cv joint popped out which with care shouldnt happen. so take it all out to rebuild on a bench was thought to easier than in situe.
surely it's the garage at fault?

If the bearing was 'free' inside the diff no one would know until the driveshaft was removed from the diff.

Can you get rebuilt duffs as I believe if I have to pay your looking at a couple of k.
My question though would be why was it taken out. Was it to make it easy or the correct thing to do?

All fixed not sure. What happened but apparently a big was had new driveshaft etc! They managed to pull the bearing back in with an internal puller.
However no charge so at least when someone messes up they sort it out that's the sort of garage we like
